The latest news from Oh My Japan's development team

From April 29 until May 6, Japan is celebrating Golden Week, a series of four national holidays (Showa Day, Constitution Day, Greenery Day, and Children's Day). The week is called "Golden Week" because in the 1950s, more people went to the movies during this period than any other time of the year, leading to a "golden" stretch of ticket sales. During this week, many Japanese are able to take some time off work to spend with their families and friends.

Today I am proud to announce a new milestone in Oh My Japan’s development-- there are now people from more than 100 countries-- 103, in fact-- using Oh My Japan. In under three years, tens of thousands of people from the majority of countries on earth have joined the site. The Oh My Japan team would like to thank all of you for making this site a truly international place for sharing Japanese culture with the world, and the cultures of the world with Japan.

From April 2 until April 9, Oh My Japan is allowing all members who have completed their profiles to send messages to two new people per day (normally, members can only send messages to two new people per week unless they have a paid account). Hanami scene

Oh My Japan recently hit a new milestone-- more than 10,000 active members. Every day, more Japanese people interested in meeting foreigners (gaikokujin) join Oh My Japan.

With so many new faces, I wanted to make sure it is as easy as possible to start using the site. To this end, I collected and organized all our help information into a single page.

If you’re interested, check out our new how to use Oh My Japan page.

Although most Oh My Japan members are open to making friends with anyone, some members have highly specific goals related to language study and/or romance.

To help all members have a more enjoyable experience on Oh My Japan, we have introduced a new opt-in feature to allow members who are only interested in communicating with Japanese people (or Japanese people who are only interested in communicating with foreigners) to block all other members from sending messages to them.
